Video Games

For or Against

In present days video games have become a part of our lives. Almost every family has Xbox or PlayStation at home to play games. If you think about it, then an average teenager spends about 1/4 of his life playing video games, chatting, watching films or I could just say - looking at a screen.

FOR
Video games is a very good way to relax and have fun. Also if you are angry you can put all your anger into a game and calm down after that. There are many logical games for kids that would help and improve your thinking.

AGAINST
Many people get addicted to video games really fast. After playing games for many hours you don't feel where is reality and where is video game. Video games drags you into it.. There are many stories of people who have been playing shooting video games for many hours and after that they don't understand what they do and they go out and shoot people in real life. Top 10 cases of of extreme game addiction you can see here.

In all together I'm not against video games if you can control yourself. You need to know when to stop and always take regular breaks when you play video games.

Hypodermic needle theory, users and gratifications, reception study and passive or active consumptions.

The Hypodermic needle theory is some kind of a message passed to the audience. For example, if we imagine that a advert company is a ''gun'' and every advert is a ''bullet'' then these companies usually fire these bullets into viewers heads without them knowing it. If some company would advertise meat, they would put more red colours in the advert because meat is red and it tricks our brain so we feel that we want to eat it.

Users and gratifications is where someone from listening or watching your product is trying to gain something, usually that is:

  • Pleasure
  • Emotional Release
  • Escaping from reality

As I will be shooting a music video I could use some of this information in there as film something that describes a song of a music video.

Reception Theory

Reception Theory

Reception Theory is understanding media by how audience see it and how these texts are read by audience. As for example when you watch a music video with a storyline on TV and someone distracts you or keeps asking some questions you may miss some important parts of this music video and you will not be able to understand what was showed there.

Vantage point

When I watched the film Vantage Point I watched in the classroom with my friends and it was projected on the white board in front of the classroom. It was really hard to concentrate on this film because many people were chatting and didn't let me watch it properly. Also the room was brightly lit so it made it hard to actually watch the film.

Audience Profile

An audience profile is A formal description of the characteristics of the people who make up a target audience.

I don't care about what
others say, I'm who I am

Research Methods

Research

My second idea was to make a trailer for a movie. I've been looking at many trailers on YouTube to see  how to edit a trailer properly. Mainly trailers show the biggest and most interesting moments of movie. Also there are many fast cuts to different scenes, soundtrack from a movie and the dates when you will be able to watch a movie in the cinemas.

Qualitative research is when I make a new data. Basically I go out on and ask people to answer my question and after that I get an answer which is qualified a qualitative research. For qualitative research I could ask people from my city to give me some information about what they would like to see in a trailer for some movie. What information they want to know about a movie after watching the trailer.

Quantitative research is when I find information using internet, books, any other previous made surveys etc. Basically it's when I use already existing data. I will get my quantitative research done by asking people on Facebook or other social network websites to fill out surveys about my media product. For example I could ask them:
  1. What would you expect to see in a trailer?
  2. How long a trailer should be?
.. and any other similar questions.

Secondary research results could be used to see what information and statistics other people have found about trailers in media industry.

Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback

Focus group are key to understand audience. Usually to find a target audience for any media product you can make a questionnaires or surveys and ask people to fill them out. It would be really useful for you to know what is the target audience for your particular product. Focus groups would have to be separated into males and females and asked to fill out the questionnaires. Most likely different genders would have completely different opinions on product so that's the reason why you would have to separate them.

After you get reviews you can compare and put all statistics together, so you know who is the target audience and what they are expecting to see in your media product.

Even if you get any complaints from the audience it is the great way to know what you did wrong and how to improve yourself next time.

Representation

Representation

The definition of representation is, the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature. These are usually used along with stereo types, for example with the elderly you have the clothes, the attitude and the facial expressions. I found a video that has all these components in and really describes how the elderly stereotype.

As I had a look at this picture of two elderly people I found some stereotypes as:

  • Sadness
  • Clothes (Plain, Simple)
  • Facial Expressions
  • Sitting Down
  • Hand Placement
  • Depression

This stereotype is really negative because not always old people do these things. Sometimes old people work, travel or even go swimming.
